Staff and Athlete Training Camp, April 2005

25th April, 2005

The coming together of 13 members of staff at the first BBSKA staff training camp signalled a new and exciting era for British Skeleton. The camp kicked off with a two-day workshop by one of the country’s leading sport psychologist Professor Lew Hardy. Lew lead a highly informative session designed to enhance what is already regarded as the world’s best support team in Skeleton. The diverse staff team range from masseurs and physiotherapists to administrators and sport psychologists all responsible for ensuring that athletes in the BBSKA high-performance pathway reach optimal performance.

The staff moved onto the idyllic surroundings provided by Bisham Abbey National Sports Centre to continue the review & planning camp. After two days in the ‘classroom’ at the University of Bath it was time for the staff to enjoy some more physical team building exercises. All out war was raged on the paintball battlefield with ‘Team Gruenberger’ (feat. Jonnie Greene, Andi Schmid & Daisy Brooke) coming out victorious. Matthew Thombs’ skill with a paintball grenade surprised everyone including himself!

Slightly shell-shocked the staff were back to business when they were joined a day later by the Performance Pathway athletes. After a successful series of performances on the ice this season across all three squads there was much to discuss during the review sessions. Sessions covered all aspects of performance including nutrition, psychology and physical preparation.

The team challenge this year was an inflatable ‘it’s a knock out competition’. The photos speak for themselves! Thanks to Phil Searle for arranging the activities.

Jonnie Greene (BBSKA Masseur) held workshops on massage. Athletes learnt the basic principles of massage and got some hands-on experience using each other as guinea pigs. Matthew Thombs (BBSKA Sport Psychologist) continued his excellent sport psychology support programme with workshops with each squad.

Well done to everyone involved for their hard-work over the course of the training camp! The support team and athletes look forward to their next training camp to be held in June.
