Britain’s Kristan Bromley clinched the men’s bob skeleton World Championship 22nd February, 2008 Britain’s Kristan Bromley clinched the men’s bob skeleton World Championship today at Altenberg in Germany and in doing so made history as the first person to hold the World Championship, European Championship and World Cup titles in the same season.
Bromley led all the way after recording the fastest time on the first of four runs yesterday and finished the competition with 0.68 seconds in hand of Jon Montgomery of Canada who took the silver medal and 0.74 seconds ahead of bronze medalist Frank Rommel from Germany.
Britain’s other representatives, Adam Pengilly and Anthony Sawyer, finished 10th and 17th respectively.
Track conditions were again variable and became progressively slower as the track became worn. At the end of the third run, Germany’s Florian Grassl had reduced Bromley’s lead to 0.15 seconds, with Montgomery producing the fastest run of the heat to close on the two leaders and set up a nail-biting finish. Only the top 20 competitors qualified for the final run, for which the starting order was decided on placings in reverse order of merit with Bromley the last to go.
Grassl lost his chance with several crucial mistakes but Bromley, who has been the model of consistency all season, held his nerve on the final run to take the gold medal and his first World Championship title.
“It was amazing,” said Bromley afterwards. “It hasn’t really sunk in yet. Of all the three titles this season this was the one I really wanted. It’s truly amazing.”
Bromley’s coach Michael Gruenberger said: “It’s a great result for Kristan. It showed that in very difficult conditions what an athlete of his experience and skill can achieve. Throughout the season Kristan’s big weapon has been his consistency and under pressure he delivered a fantastic performance in the final run and pulled up half a second on the opposition.”
At the halfway stage in the women’s event Britain’s Amy Williams is in fifth place, just over a second off the lead, with Maggie Davies in eighth.
Both British women produced superb second runs, with Williams recording the fastest time of the heat to improve her position by two places after starting from seventh position at the end of the first run.
The women’s event concludes tomorrow with the final two runs, starting at 14.00hrs local time.
