The British Olympic Association (BOA) was formed at a meeting at the House of Commons on 24 May, 1905. Great Britain is one of only five countries, which has never failed to be represented at the Olympic Games since 1896: Australia, France, Greece and Switzerland being the others. Of these, only France, Great Britain and Switzerland have also been present at all Olympic Winter Games. The BOA has assisted in hosting two Olympic Games, in 1908 and 1948, on both occasions in London.
The Talented Athlete Scholarship Scheme, or TASS as it is better known, is a Government funded programme that represents a unique partnership between sport and higher and further education. The programme awards Scholarships and Bursars to talented athletes that are committed to combining their sport and education.
The range of services supplied by the EIS spans sports science and sports medicine. Support includes applied physiology, biomechanics, medical consultation, medical screening, nutritional advice, performance analysis, psychology, podiatry, strength and conditioning coaching, sports massage and sports vision. The quality of the delivery is assured by the close relationship the EIS is developing with national governing bodies, performance directors, coaches, and the athletes themselves. Almost 2,000 competitors are currently in the EIS system.
A number of international performers and squads have made the campus their home to benefit from the facilities available. In the case of the British Skeleton the dry push-track based up at the University is a central part of their training. Skeleton form part of the family of sportsmen and women known as Team Bath. There are Team Bath Squads in the following sports: Badminton, Basketball, Bobskeleton, Bobsleigh, Judo, Hockey, Football, Modern Pentathlon, Netball, Rugby, Swimming, Track & Field, Tennis and Triathlon.
The Bobsleigh and Skeleton sports are governed internationally by the 'Fédération Internationale de Bobsleigh et de Tobogganing' (FIBT) which organises the annual World Cup series, World Championships, Euroepean Chamionships, Americas Cup & Europa Cup events. The sport is part of the Olympic Winter Games and the Winter Goodwill Games.
