Bromley fifth going into final day of skeleton at Vancouver 2010

A terrific second run by Team GB’s Kristan Bromley put him within five-hundredths of a second of the medal places at the halfway mark of the Vancouver 2010 skeleton competition.

Bromley, representing Team GB at his third Olympic Winter Games, was seventh after the first of today’s two runs at the Whistler Sliding Centre.

But his second run – the fifth fastest - promoted him two places up the rankings going into Friday’s final two runs.

His combined time of 1:45.80 is 0.89 seconds behind that of race leader Martins Dukurs of Latvia and just 0.05 seconds off Russia’s Alexander Tretyakov, who is in third.

Fellow Team GB athlete Adam Pengilly goes into the final day of skeleton at Vancouver 2010 in 20th.

Bromley said "My second run was better than my first. I'm in the mix now and I just need to keep fighting away.

It's great to move up the table and be within grasp of a medal.

"It will all be on the final run tomorrow. When the pressure starts to build people start to make mistakes, and I'm hoping to capitalise on that. Fingers crossed we can pull something out tomorrow.

“I just need to stay focussed and use the experience I’ve gained from the last two Olympic Winter Games to make sure I don’t do anything silly.”

Bromley followed his 52.91 seconds on the first run with 52.89 on the second for a combined 1:45.80.

Pengilly, competing at his second Olympic Winter Games, clocked 53.75 in the first run and followed that up with 54.17 in the second for a total of 1:47.92, putting him 3:01 seconds off the lead.

"It was a disappointing day today,” he said. “I need to collect my thoughts now and try to start again tomorrow. I'm a long way off the pace, but hopefully I can show people I'm a better slider than the results suggest and should be higher up the field.”
